The Federal Ministry of Works has paid a poignant tribute to the late Senator Mpigi Barinada Barry, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, whose recent
passing is described as immeasurable loss to the nation’s infrastructure development.

The memorial, held at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, brought together a diverse assembly of political figures, party chieftains, and traditional leaders from Ogoniland, all united in mourning a man celebrated for his integrity and dedication.

Senator Engr. David Umahi, the Minister of Works, delivered a heartfelt message, expressing profound sorrow over Senator Barinada’s demise.

He highlighted the late Senator’s invaluable contributions to national development, noting that his death
remains a painful reality for many.

Umahi recounted his close working relationship with Senator Mpigi, fostered through the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

This collaboration offered him a firsthand perspective on Senator Mpigi’s character, revealing a man of impeccable integrity whose word was his bond—a rare quality in the political landscape.
The Minister lauded Senator Mpigi as a dedicated and loyal bridge-builder, instrumental in uniting colleagues across party lines for the national interest.

His pivotal role in the emergence of Godswill Akpabio as Senate President was cited as a testament to his influence.

Beyond his immediate constituency, Senator Mpigi distinguished himself as a
national figure, advocating vigorously for infrastructure projects across diverse states, including Lagos, Ogun, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Kano.
As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, Mpigi’s leadership significantly bolstered legislative oversight, fostered robust collaboration between National Assembly and the Federal Ministry of Works. This synergy was crucial in the successful delivery of key infrastructure projects.

Notably, Senator Mpigi played a critical role in resolving challenges on major road projects, such as the Bodo-Bonny Road and the rehabilitation of the Eleme‒Onne section of the EastWest Road in Rivers State.

His calm demeanor, humility, and selfless approach to public service, coupled with his strategic interventions, were vital in ensuring the successful continuation and completion of these projects.
In a significant acknowledgment of Sen. Mpigi’s selfless service, President Bola Ahmed.Tinubu, GCFR, has approved the rerouting of a section of the Lagos‒Calabar Coastal Highway to pass through Ogoniland.

This decision stands as an enduring testament to late lawmaker’s profound legacy Engr. Umahi expressed regret that Senator Mpigi would not witness the commissioning of several landmark projects he championed.

These includes the Bodo-Bonny Road, the redesigned Eleme‒Onne Road, and sections of the Lagos‒Calabar Coastal Highway.
He assured the bereaved family of the FG’s unwavering support, pledging that the Ministry of Works, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, continue to advance the developmental vision championed by the late Senator.

“We will not forget his family, his community, and his good intentions for Nigeria. Sen Mpigi’s legacy of integrity, patriotism, and service will continue to inspire the nation and guide ongoing infrastructure development efforts,” Umahi affirmed.

He concluded by praying for the repose of Senator Mpigi’s soul, urged Nigerians to find solace in his impactful life and enduring contributions to national development.
