Her Excellency, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has reacted to the assaults at a Festival in Delta State.
She condemned the “horrific viral footage” depicting physical and sexual assaults, alongside “degrading and barbaric treatment,” of women and girls during the Alue-Do Festival in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State over the weekend.
In a statement released on Sunday, Senator Tinubu expressed her deep respect for Nigeria’s diverse cultures and traditions but firmly asserted that “no such tradition or custom grants any man the right to violate the dignity or freedom of any woman or girl.”
The First Lady commended the Nigeria Police Force for the swift arrests already made in connection with the incident.
She further urged all relevant authorities to ensure that “all perpetrators face the full weight of the law,” emphasizing the need for justice for the victims.
Addressing those affected by the unfortunate events, Senator Tinubu encouraged them to “seek the relevant medical and psychological help.”
She concluded her statement with a prayer for their “healing, peace and strength at this difficult time.”
It was reported that girls and women were reportedly raped, molested, and assaulted by youths in Ozoro Kingdom, the headquarters of Isoko North Local Government Area in Delta State.
The incident, which has garnered widespread attention following the circulation of viral footage, highlights ongoing concerns regarding gender- based violence and the need for cultural practices to uphold human dignity and rights.
