Ghana has intensified surveillance and emergency preparedness measures following Ebola outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya and Nigeria, although no case has been recorded in the country.
The Ministry of Health said Kenya reported an imported case of Ebola caused by the Bundibugyo virus on October 6, followed by six additional linked cases, including among healthcare workers. Nigeria confirmed a case in the Federal Capital Territory on October 20.
The ministry described the developments as a heightened risk to Ghana, citing direct flights and increasing passenger movement between Ghana and Kenya, as well as frequent travel between Ghana and Nigeria.
In response, authorities are strengthening screening at points of entry, particularly airports, and have engaged the Ghana Airports Company Limited, the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority and other partners to improve coordination.
The Ghana Health Service has also conducted simulation exercises at the Accra International Airport and the Ghana Infectious Disease Centre.
Other measures include monitoring travellers from high-risk areas for 21 days, updating laboratory procedures and sensitising health workers on the identification and management of suspected cases.
The ministry said public education campaigns are being conducted at airports, while travellers are being advised to seek immediate medical care if they develop symptoms after visiting an affected area or coming into contact with a suspected or confirmed case.
Ebola symptoms may appear between two and 21 days after exposure and can include high fever, severe headache, extreme fatigue, sore throat, chills, unexplained bleeding and confusion.
The disease spreads through direct contact with the blood or bodily fluids of an infected person, or contaminated materials. It is not airborne.
The Ministry of Health urged the public to practise good hand hygiene, avoid contact with people showing unexplained fever, vomiting, diarrhoea or bleeding, and refrain from spreading unverified information.
It reassured the public that the necessary measures are being implemented to protect public health, while calling on citizens to remain calm and follow official updates.
