The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has declared force majeure on the 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi Transmission Line after a transmission tower collapsed during heavy winds and rainstorms.
The line tripped at 10:44 p.m. on Monday, September 7, 2026. An attempted reclosure at 11:07 p.m. failed, prompting TCN linesmen from the Birnin Kebbi Sub-Region to launch a fault-finding patrol along the transmission corridor.
The team discovered on Tuesday that Tower T367 had collapsed, disrupting the transmission of bulk electricity through the Kainji–Birnin Kebbi corridor, also known as 2KNJ–BRK1.
TCN said preliminary findings linked the collapse to severe weather conditions in the area. In response, the company has begun mobilising personnel, equipment and other resources to rehabilitate the tower and restore the line as quickly as possible.
Despite the damage, TCN said electricity transmission to Sokoto has been sustained through an alternative route. The Talata Mafara–Sokoto corridor is currently receiving supply from the Kaduna-Mando axis via the 132kV Zaria–Funtua–Gusau transmission line.
While acknowledging the potential inconvenience to electricity consumers and other stakeholders, TCN assured the public that it is making every effort to return the affected transmission line to service at the earliest possible time.
