On behalf of the Federal Government, the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent his condolences to the family, the government and people of Anambra State over the death of the former Chairman of National Electoral Commission, Prof Humphery Nwosu.
Tinubu, ably represented by the Minister of Works, Senator (Engr) David Nweze Umahi at the funeral service for the late Professor held in Ajalli, Orumba North Local Govt Area of Anambra State, on 28th March 2025.
Reported has it that on behalf of the family, Engr. Nnaemeka Humphrey Nwosu in a statement announced that Prof. Nwosu died on October 20, 2024, following a brief illness.At the burial, the President who noted that Prof Nwosu would be remembered for his commitment to a democratic Nigeria, urged politicians to imbibe his culture of industry, integrity, patriotism and support for his ideals of democracy which were the hallmarks of his public service.
He said Prof Nwosu was a statesman whose sojourn on earth was full of impact and inspiration. “As we mourn the death of Prof Humphery Nwosu, we are invited to celebrate him for his profound accomplishments, personal fulfilments as a public administrator, political scientist, and academics icon.
“We are urged to reflect on his democratic ideals and his sense of commitment to a democratic Nigeria. These are the hallmarks of his life and times that will be cherished beyond this generation”, Tinubu added.The President expressed the unwavering commitment to Renewed Hope Agenda in revolutionizing the development of the critical sectors of the economy that would stimulate economic growth and national development.
He said, “May I assure Nigerians that the fragile economy we inherited is now alive and on a path of sustainable growth. We have overcome the worst.
“Our democracy is growing, and I assure Nigerians that my administration will continue to deepen the democracy benefits for the good of all Nigerians.”
In his remarks the Governor of Anambra State, Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo, said Prof Nwosu would be remembered as an electoral umpire that introduced Option A4 voting.“And Open ballot system and conducted one of the freest and fairest general elections in Nigeria’s history”, while urged his family, community, and associates to continue to work to sustain the values that depict his life and times.
Stakeholders who attended the funeral ceremony included: The Governor of Anambra, Prof Charles Chukwu Soludo, the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti; former Anambra Governor, Peter Obi.
Also, the former Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha; Senator representing Anambra Central, Senator Victor Umeh; Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement, South East, Barr. (Mrs) Chioma Nweze.
Former member, Federal House of Representatives, Darlington Onuabuchi Okereke, among other serving and former Government functionaries.
