Leaders consoles Namibia over President Hage Geingob’s death

Leaders around the world have consoled the people of Namibia and its government over the passing of President Hage Geingob on early hours of Sunday.

According to report which stated that the stalwart of the Nation’s independence movement, Mr Geingob disclosed his battle with cancer to the public just last month.

Geingob’s death was confirmed by his Vice, Nangolo Mbumba and was surrounded by his wife and children in his final moments, aged 82 and passed on when undergoing medical treatment at a hospital in the capital, Windhoek.

In a statement by his aide, President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu on behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, extended condolences to the government and people of Namibia over the passing of President Hage Geingob.

Tinubu mourned the painful loss of this veteran in the struggle for democracy; proponent of good governance, advocate of economic, social, and political solidarity among African peoples.

The President noted that this tragedy comes at a time that Africa needs more visionary leaders who believe in the common destiny of the continent, and who can strengthen bonds across borders and spread tendrils of cooperation across all fields of human endeavour.

As Namibia mourns, Tinubu assured the Republic that his thoughts and prayers, and indeed those of Nigerians, are with them.

While on X (formerly Twitter), Tanzanian President, Samiu Suluhu sent condolences to the people of the Republic of Namibia, the Acting President, His Excellency Dr. Nangolo Mbumba, Madam First Lady, Her Excellency Monica Kalondo, family, friends and comrades in SWAPO.

Suluhu who is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the President, described Hage Geingob as a dear brother, a venerable Pan Africanist and a great friend of Tanzania, prayed that Namibians should be comforted during this difficult time. “May his soul rest in peace”, she said.

United Nations General Assembly UNGA President, Dennis Francis on X saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Hage Geingob, adding that Namibia, Africa and indeed the world at large have lost an icon and true champion of self-determination,

“Independence, democracy, multilateralism, and the principles and purposes of the UN. My deepest condolences to his family and to the Government and People of Namibia. May his great soul rest in eternal Peace”, UNGA President said.

African Union Commission (AU) President, Moussa Faki Mahamat on X said, “A baobab has fallen. My most sincere condolences to the Govt, the people and the family of my brother, H.E. Dr Hage Geingob, President of the Republic of Namibia.

He also described Namibian President as an inspiring Pan-Africanist leader who led his country with humility, determination and courage until the end.

Ethiopian President, Abiy Ahmed in his reaction on X said, “In this somber moment, our nation extends its sincere condolences to the people and government of Namibia on the loss of President Hage Geingob. May his legacy of leadership endure in the collective memory”.

President, African Development Bank, Akinwumi Adesina who was saddened by the passing away of Namibian President, described him as a great pan-Africanist and defender of social justice. “Africa has lost a great leader. May God comfort your wife and family and the people of Namibia. I will greatly miss you”, he said.
