As Nigeria celebrates its 64th anniversary, a renewed spotlight is being cast on tourism as a vital tool for national unity and economic growth.
The forthcoming Destination Nigeria Governors’ Tourism Conference is set to underscore the transformative potential of tourism, bringing together state leaders and key stakeholders to explore opportunities for tourism-driven development.
In an exclusive interview, Ambassador Ayo Omotoso, the visionary behind the conference, emphasized that Nigeria’s rich diversity of cultures, languages, and traditions positions tourism as a powerful bridge across regional divides.
“When you consider Nigeria’s various backgrounds, tribes, and tongues, the one factor that consistently unites us is tourism,” Ambassador Omotoso noted.
He further explained that tourism has historically served as a platform for fostering unity, transcending regional differences, and helping to forge a stronger national identity.
“At the core of this year’s conference is the drive to promote each state’s unique cultural and natural attractions. Every state in Nigeria has its own comparative advantage in terms of culture and values,” said Omotoso.
He elaborated, “Whether it’s Lagos with its business tourism, Bauchi with its safari adventures, or Akwa Ibom with its celebrated cuisine, each region has something special to offer.”
*Beyond promoting Nigeria’s scenic beauty and cultural heritage, tourism is also recognized as a critical economic tool. Tourism has the capacity to create jobs and significantly alleviate poverty,” Ambassador Omotoso added.
He mentioned, “Sectors such as hospitality, transportation, and restaurants all stand to benefit from the multiplier effect of a thriving tourism industry.
“The conference will call on state governors to prioritize infrastructure development, emphasizing that tourism can substantially boost state economies by attracting both domestic and international visitors.
“With delegates expected from across Africa, the event also presents a unique platform for cultural exchange and collaboration.
“By drawing inspiration from African nations like Kenya and South Africa, which have successfully harnessed the power of tourism for national development, Nigerian governors will explore best practices and investment opportunities to further the country’s tourism agenda.
“The Destination Nigeria Governors’ Tourism Conference is poised to be a landmark event, fostering unity, driving economic progress, and positioning Nigeria as a premier destination on the continent.
“As Nigeria marks 64 years of independence, the role of tourism in shaping the country’s future has never been more evident.
In his conclusion, Ambassador Omotoso urged all levels of government to recognize tourism as a crucial tool in the fight against poverty.
“We look forward to seeing full participation from all tiers of government at Destination Nigeria Governors’ Tourism Conference. It’s time to invest in tourism as a catalyst for infrastructure development and sustainable growth,” he said.
