In a move to transform the relationship between the state and its citizens, the Federal Government has unveiled the Tax Ombud Office, signaling a new era of accountability in Nigeria’s fiscal landscape.

The launch, which featured the debut of a dedicated official website and a toll-free call center, marks a significant milestone in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” Agenda.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony in Abuja, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, emphasized that the initiative is more than just a technological upgrade.

It represents a fundamental shift toward a tax system anchored in fairness rather than just enforcement.

By providing a professional mechanism for complaint resolution, the Tax Ombud Office serves as a vital bridge, ensuring that taxpayers are heard and their rights protected.

“Tax administration cannot succeed on enforcement alone,” Minister Idris remarked. “It must be supported by public trust, transparency, fairness, and effective communication.”
The Minister highlighted that while taxation remains the lifeblood of national development —funding essential infrastructure, healthcare, and security—its sustainability depends on public confidence.

The new toll-free center is designed to strip away the bureaucratic barriers that often discourage compliance, allowing Nigerians to resolve disputes and seek
information without financial or administrative burden.

Beyond administrative efficiency, the govt is focusing on civic education to foster a culture of “national participation and shared responsibility.”
By addressing misinformation
and promoting transparency, the Ministry of Information aims to replace public distrust with a sense of shared purpose, ensuring that every citizen understands their role in building a more resilient and prosperous economy.

The event was attended by high-ranking officials, including Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of Economy, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, and the Head of the Civil Service, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack.

Their presence underscored a unified government front dedicated to a tax administration system that is responsive, efficient, and, above all, fair to every Nigerian.
