In a stern address that reverberated through Nigeria’s industrial landscape, the Honourable Minister of Works, Sen. Engr. David Umahi, has issued a direct challenge to cement manufacturers: drastically reduce prices or face government intervention.

Speaking at the rebranding ceremony of Lafarge to HBM, a member of HUAXIN Group, on June 21, 2026, the Minister underscored critical role of affordable cement in realizing the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ambitious infrastructure agenda.

Umahi’s declaration comes amidst growing concerns that the current high cost of cement is stifling ongoing infrastructure projects and forcing contractors to seek costly contract
variations.

“I want to insist that Lafarge now HBM and other manufacturers of cement
should reduce their prices,” the Minister asserted, emphasizing that the burden of cost review lies squarely with the manufacturers, not the govt or contractors.

He announced that the Federal Government would initiate engagements with cement manufacturers starting July 1, 2026, to address the pricing issue.

This move signals a proactive stance by the administration to safeguard its significant investments in national
development.

Highlighting President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” Umahi pointed to massive infrastructure projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as testament to the government’s vision.

He urged manufacturers to expand their production capacity to meet the burgeoning demand generated by these projects, assuring them of government support and partnership.

The Minister proudly noted the international recognition for the quality of Nigeria’s infrastructure initiatives, citing the Dudge Bank’s assessment of the coastal highway as “undervalued” and of “topmost quality.”

Umahi concluded by expressing profound gratitude to President Tinubu, affirming the administration’s unwavering commitment to national transformation. “Mr. President is committed to retake this country.

The President knows what he is doing. The vision and mission are achievable and we are on course and this country will be taken back for the good of Nigerians,” he stated, reinforcing the govt’s resolve to restore prosperity through strategic infrastructure development.
