In a landmark courtesy visit that signals renewed era of institutional partnership, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has publicly reaffirmed its ironclad commitment to the Federal Character Principle.
This is Nigeria’s cornerstone policy for ensuring that every citizen, regardless of origin, gets a fair shot at participation in national life.
The NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, made the declaration during a high-profile visit to the Federal Character Commission (FCC) headquarters in Abuja, where he met with Executive Chairman Hon. Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran.
The message was clear: equity is not optional, and the NYSC is fully on board.
“The Federal Character Principle is a critical instrument for ensuring equitable representation of Nigerians across states, geopolitical zones, ethnic groups and religious backgrounds,” General Nafiu stated.
He underlined that the Scheme had consistently adhered to due process and government regulations in all its statutory responsibilities.
What makes this visit particularly significant is the mutual recognition that the mandates of both institutions — the NYSC and the FCC — are deeply complementary.
Both exist to promote national unity, inclusiveness, and equal participation in nation-building. And both are now pledging to work even more closely together to make that vision a lived reality for millions of young Nigerians.
The NYSC DG pledged full compliance with the Commission’s guidelines on personnel placement and all matters relating to the Federal Character Principle, sending a strong signal to critics and supporters alike.
Commission Chairman Hon. Hulayat Omidiran, for her part, reminded ministries, departments, and agencies that strict adherence to the FCC’s policies is non-negotiable if Nigeria is to sustain public confidence and prevent the dangerous sentiment of marginalisation that has undermined national cohesion in the past.
Ahead of the main visit, General Nafiu also held an interactive session with the FCC Committee on Social Development, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy — chaired by Federal Commissioner Hon. Pam Bot-Mang — where both parties explored practical ways to strengthen collaboration on equity in recruitment, postings, promotions, and appointments across government institutions.
For millions of Nigerian youths whose futures depend on fair access to opportunities, this renewed partnership between the NYSC and the FCC could mark a turning point — one where words are matched by action, and where the promise of a united Nigeria becomes more than just a slogan.
