The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed profound concern, extended heartfelt condolences following a tragic attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North,
Plateau State.
In a press briefing held on Tuesday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, reassured Nigerians that security agencies actively addressing the situation and committed to ensuring lasting peace and security in the region.
Idris conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s condolences to the victims’ families and the people of Plateau State.
He highlighted the swift response of security forces, stating that troops under Operation Enduring Peace were immediately mobilized to the scene.
“These forces cordoned off the affected area, secured key access routes, and launched targeted search-and-clearance operations to apprehend perpetrators”, the Minister revealed.
These actions, he noted, effectively contained the situation and prevented further escalation. “This immediate response is part of a broader, sustained security strategy by the Federal Govt in Plateau State and the North-Central region.
“The Nigerian Armed Forces have
been conducting continuous clearance operations and intelligence-led missions in vulnerable communities.
“Enhanced surveillance and troop deployments, supported by joint military- police patrols and strengthened rapid response mechanisms, are in place to
proactively neutralize threats and maintain stability.
At the national level, the Federal Government remains steadfast in its commitment to security, evidenced by ongoing targeted military offensives aimed at dismantling criminal, insurgent networks across the country.
These efforts reflect a comprehensive and evolving approach to safeguarding lives and property.
Hours before the briefing, President Tinubu convened a high-level meeting with top security and intelligence chiefs to review the situation and strategize further decisive steps.
Following this, the Governor of Plateau, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, was invited by the President for further deliberations to chart a coordinated path towards lasting peace and security.
The outcomes of this crucial meeting will be made public shortly, underscoring the Federal Govt’s serious commitment to prompt and effective action.
The Plateau State Government has also implemented complementary measures, including a 48-hour curfew in Jos North immediately after the incident to stabilize the security environment and support ongoing operations.
The state government is working closely
with federal security agencies to prevent reprisals, restore calm, and facilitate
investigations.
Minister Idris clarified that while deeply regrettable, the incident does not signify a national security breakdown.
He characterized it as a criminal act within a known conflict-prone area, which is being decisively addressed by authorities.
Plateau State has historically faced localized security challenges stemming from communal tensions and criminal activities.
All security agencies have been directed to identify, apprehend, and bring to justice those responsible for this heinous act, with a firm declaration that there will be no safe haven for criminal elements in Nigeria.
Ongoing operations are generating actionable intelligence, and accountability for the attack is assured.
Nigerians were reassured that the security situation in Plateau State is under control and actively managed.
The FG reiterated its full commitment to protecting lives and property nationwide, promising to strengthen intelligence capabilities, operational readiness, and inter-agency coordination to counter emerging threats.
Citizens are urged to remain calm, law- abiding, and cooperative with security agencies, and to avoid spreading unverified information that could exacerbate tensions.
The Minister emphasized that Nigeria’s unity remains strong, and criminal elements will not be allowed to divide communities.
The Federal Government, in collaboration with the Plateau State Government and other stakeholders, will continue to act decisively to ensure lasting peace and security.
“Nigeria will not yield to fear. We will protect our people, and we will prevail,” Minister Idris concluded.
