The Minister of Works, Senator Engr. David Nweze Umahi, has challenged the Federal Controllers of Works to take full ownership of their projects, prioritise the interests of Nigerians and remain committed to delivering quality roads nationwide.
Umahi gave the charge on Wednesday at the Ministry’s monthly meeting with the Federal Controllers of Works from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Mabushi, Abuja.
The meeting serves as a regular platform for reviewing the progress of federal road projects, addressing implementation challenges and strengthening supervision and accountability across the country.
The Minister urged the Controllers to develop a deeper understanding of construction and make continuous learning a priority.
He stressed that effective supervision requires more than administrative oversight, noting that officials must understand the realities of work being carried out on project sites.
“Take interest in the construction. Read your books to improve. I learn a lot from the site, not from the office,” Umahi said.
He encouraged the Controllers to spend more time at project sites, engage with contractors and workers, and remain attentive to the experiences of communities directly affected by federal road projects.
According to the Minister, public service becomes more impactful when it is guided by genuine passion for the people.
Reflecting on his tenure as Governor of Ebonyi State, Umahi attributed his accomplishments to faith, dedication and a strong sense of responsibility to the public.
“When you put the people first, you are putting God first. You will enjoy your job. You will be happy with the job,” he said.
Umahi further urged the Controllers to remain diligent and accountable, emphasising that the success of federal road projects should ultimately be measured by the difference they make in the lives of Nigerians.
He added that sincere commitment to the people not only gives meaning to public service but also creates lasting value for the officials and their families.
