The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has unveiled a new Load & Outage Analytics platform designed to improve visibility, accountability and reliability across the national transmission network.
The Streamlit-based application, developed entirely in-house by TCN’s Operations Department, was presented and demonstrated at the company’s headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.
The platform features 13 modules that consolidate operational data and provide region-, station-, transformer- and feeder-level analysis.
TCN Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, represented by the General Manager, Project Coordination, Engr. Aminu Tahir, commended the team behind the system.
He said improved load management, supply-demand matching and grid stability would help reduce outages, lower the cost of prolonged interruptions and address technical and commercial losses affecting the company’s performance.
Presenting the platform, the General Manager of Operations, Engr. Godwin Afamefuna Aguiyi, said TCN’s existing reliability reporting system was undermined by fragmented spreadsheets, slow manual compilation, inconsistent performance calculations and the absence of a comprehensive audit trail.
He said the new platform would automatically classify outages, generate reliability indicators and produce board-ready reports in minutes instead of days.
It also introduces role-based access, structured data uploads and individual user credentials, replacing shared logins and unmanaged spreadsheet access.
Using July 2026 outage data as a demonstration, Aguiyi said regional teams had submitted records of 3,714 outages nationwide, resulting in 48,603 megawatt-hours of load lost.
The Lagos region accounted for 20,693 MWh, including 572 emergency outages, 306 forced outages and 129 planned outages.
The presentation further showed that 22 feeders exceeded allowable outage hours, with associated losses valued at ₦720.33 million. The Obosi feeder in Onitsha, for instance, recorded a loss of 1,063.74 MWh at Band A rates.
TCN stressed that the figures were representative field submissions intended for cross-referencing with the Nigerian Independent System Operator’s official release.
The company also clarified that the 33kV feeder-level data covered the load and outage segment for which TCN was accountable in July, separate from the portion attributable to distribution companies.
The platform incorporates the Fault Attribution Ratio framework, which helps determine responsibility for interruptions between TCN and the distribution companies.
Under the applicable Service Level Agreement, TCN’s allowable downtime responsibility is 30 percent, while DisCos account for 70 percent.
TCN noted that the allocation is not a fixed split for every outage, as each incident is assessed according to its fault type and responsible network segment.
Aguiyi recommended nationwide deployment of the platform, integration with Internet of Things devices for real-time data capture and upgrades to systems, display screens and internet connectivity at transmission stations.
He added that, with the required energy-measurement interfaces, the system could also support monitoring of the Transmission Losses Factor across the network.
The Executive Director of Human Resources and Corporate Services, Mrs. Abiodun Afolabi-Fadahunsi, reaffirmed management’s commitment to equipping engineers and system operators with the tools needed to support national grid stability.
She said management was monitoring daily grid reports and addressing operational needs in real time.
The unveiling marks a significant step in TCN’s digital transformation efforts. If fully implemented, the platform could replace fragmented manual reporting with faster, more transparent data-driven oversight while helping identify feeder- level inefficiencies and strengthen accountability across Nigeria’s power sector.
