Nigerian Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed has urged the world to equipped with the ability to discern truth and false information on social media by critically evaluate and wisely use information at their disposal.
Alhaji Mohammed made the call at the opening session of the eleventh Global Media and Information Literacy Week in Abuja on Monday, with the theme of this year “Nurturing Trust is a media information literacy imperative for people to follow”.
The Minister said the world and its leaders contend with the challenge of identifying what is true and what is false. “The enormous challenge the world is facing today especially with unregulated use of social media and media and other digital platforms.
“As I ponder on the state of our world, I see the urgent need for every person to be equipped with the ability to critically evaluate and wisely use information at their disposal”, he added.
Alhaji Mohammed welcomed participants and particularly the Assistant Director General of UNESCO on Communication and Information, Dr. Tawfik Jelassi and his entire team from the Agency to Nigeria.
He also urged all to give their best attention, knowing that the world awaits the outcome of this Global MIL week. “I warmly welcome you, once again, to Nigeria. I encourage you all to discover Abuja and to enjoy your stay”, he said.
The occasion is being attended to by the Assistant Director General of UNESCO on Communication and Information, Dr. Tawfik Jelassi and other participants.
