United States has called on the parties that involved in northern Ethiopia’s conflict to honor the agreement made through the African Union-led peace talks on November 2, 2022 in Pretoria, South Africa on cessation of hostilities.

In a statement released by the State Department Spokesman recently while urged to expedite humanitarian aid to all in need, protect all civilians, deliver restoration of basic services throughout northern Ethiopia.

The United States who welcomed the implementation of cessation hostilities, articulated in declaration of Senior Commanders meeting on the Implementation of the Ethiopia Permanent Cessation of Hostilities Agreement announced in Nairobi recently.

In addition to more concretely specifying the implementation of the November 2 agreement signed in Pretoria, the parties further committed to cooperate and facilitate the delivery of unhindered humanitarian access in recent agreement.

The United States also welcomed the humanitarian access permissions that have already been restored as well as the firm commitments for humanitarian assistance to flow to the Tigray Region and the affected areas of Afar and Amhara Regions to address the needs of the most vulnerable.

The United States applauded the determined efforts of AU High Representative former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta who spearheaded this effort in Nairobi, the government of Kenya for hosting, and the African Union for its leadership.

Also commended the parties for continuing to deliver on their commitments while stated that the United States will continue to support the implementation of the November 2 agreement and efforts to achieve a lasting peace. “Work remains, but progress is promising and gives the Ethiopian people reason for hope”.

Recall that a momentous step was taken in Pretoria, South Africa on Wednesday 2rd November, 2022 to advance African Union’s campaign to “silence the guns” with the signing of a cessation of hostilities between Government of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front.

South Africa played host in the peace talks between the government of Ethiopia and Tigrayan regional authorities facilitated by the African Union Commission over the conflict that have been going on for over a year in the Tigraya’s region of Ethiopia.

Reports says millions have been displaced, brutal attacks on civilians. A soaring death toll. Deliberate attacks on infrastructure. And little hope of a negotiated exit. Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region is enduring probably the most brutal and deadly war being waged.
