US warns of terrorist threats to American facilities, schools in Nigeria

The United States through its Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert for its citizens in Nigeria, citing a potential terrorist threat against American facilities and affiliated schools.

US embassy urged Americans to exercise increased caution and implement enhanced security measures.

In a statement released by the US citizens were advised to take additional precautions when visiting the Embassy in Abuja, the Consulate General in Lagos, and any American-affiliated educational institutions.

The advisory emphasized the importance of varying travel times and routes to these locations to avoid predictable patterns.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja informs U.S. citizens of a possible terrorist threat against U.S. facilities and U.S. affiliated schools in Nigeria,” the alert stated.

“Increasing awareness of your surroundings, avoiding predictable routines, and reviewing general security precautions with your family can help reduce your risk.
“The embassy has outlined several actions for U.S. citizens to take to enhance their personal security:

Recommended Action
Be constantly aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious activity. Low ProfileAvoid drawing unnecessary attention to yourself.

Personal Security Review and update your personal security plans. Change your regular travel routes and times.
Emergency Preparedness
Keep your cell phone charged for emergencies. Stay alert in public areas, including markets, hotels, and restaurants.

Avoid Crowds
Steer clear of large gatherings and demonstrations. Familiarize yourself with emergency exits upon entering buildings.

Despite the threat, both the Consular Sections of the Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will remain open for services.

The US has encouraged citizens to monitor its official website for any further updates.
For additional information and assistance, the embassy has provided contact details for its offices in Abuja and Lagos, as well as the U.S. State Department’s Consular Affairs.

This alert comes amid a complex security landscape in Nigeria, where various groups have been known to operate.

The U.S. government regularly provides security information to its citizens abroad to help them make informed decisions about their safety.

U.S. citizens in Nigeria are also encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive timely security updates and to be located more easily in an emergency.
