The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that more than 30 newborn babies have died at the hospital since the beginning of the Sudan fighting.

This was disclosed during the United Nations Press Briefing on Thursday when the UN Spokesperson was giving update of the humanitarian situation in the country.

Also, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) revealed that six newborn babies died at a hospital in the city of Eld’aeen in East Darfur recently due to problems, including lack of oxygen amid electricity blackouts.

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States of America announced that on May 20, 2023, in Jeddah, representatives of the conflicting forces signed an Agreement on a Short-Term Ceasefire and Humanitarian Arrangements.

While the short-term ceasefire, which has entered into force 48 hours after the signing of the Agreement, shall remain in effect for seven days and may be extended with the agreement of both parties.

According to the update, the humanitarian community there is mobilizing to reach as many people as it can while the ceasefire is in place and respected, in the parts where it is in place and respected.

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that some 20 trucks carrying supplies from UNICEF and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) are now on their way to different parts of Sudan.

Also, the World Food Programme (WFP), for its part, has reached more than half a million people in nine states with food and nutrition support since restarting distributions about three weeks ago.

WFP is also planning distributions in Central Darfur and Northern State.  “Yesterday, trucks loaded with food aid arrived in Wadi Halfa, and today in Port Sudan, WFP started providing food to some 4,000 new arrivals”.

With nearly five weeks of heavy fighting which resulted to hundreds of people killed and displaced nearly 450,000 civilians.

Of that total, the International Organization for Migration said, more than 115,000 have sought refuge in neighbouring countries like Egypt, Ethiopia among others.
