A new influential body, the South East Former Governors Forum, officially launched on Tuesday, April 7, bringing together seasoned leaders from the region.
The forum, spearheaded by the Minister of Works, Senator (Engr) David Umahi, aims to provide support and counsel to the current governors of the Southeast on critical zonal and national issues.
Speaking after the inaugural meeting in Enugu, Senator Umahi clarified the forum’s mission, stating, “The body is to support our presiding governors of South East and advise them on key zonal and national matters.”
He emphasized that the forum is inclusive, welcoming all ex-governors from the region “irrespective of party affiliation.”
The newly formed group also extended strong commendation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his administration’s focus on nationwide infrastructure development, significant appointments of individuals from the Southeast.
According to him, “We commend Mr. President, His Excellency Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR very highly for all the appointments.
“Some of them very key, that is given to sons and daughters of South East, and for infrastructural revolution in South East, just like what he’s doing in other regions of the country,” Senator Umahi stated.
In a statement released by his aide, the Minister further affirmed the collective support of Southeast governors for President Tinubu’s re-election efforts.
The forum anticipates a larger attendance at its next meeting, with Senator Umahi noting that many former governors were unable to attend due to medical or other engagements. 
Future plans include engaging with current governors to foster stronger regional cooperation.
Following their meeting, the forum paid a courtesy visit to the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah.
Notable former governors present at the inaugural gathering included Dr. Sullivan Chime, Chief Martin Elechi, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, Dr. Chris Ngige, and Dr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.
