Nigeria is in mourning following the profound loss of Most Reverend Dr. Bishop Peter Nworie Chukwu, the revered Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki, who passed away on April 10, 2026, at the age of 60.

His departure marks the end of an era characterized by selfless service, deep spirituality, and an unwavering dedication to the work of God, as conveyed in a heartfelt condolence message from Senator Engr. David Nweze Umahi, the Honourable Minister of Works.

Bishop Chukwu, born on November 5, 1965, in Ededeagu Umuezekohohu, Ebonyi State, dedicated his life to the Church. He was ordained a priest on July 3, 1993, and served for 28 years before his elevation to the episcopacy.

Pope Francis appointed him as the third
Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese on July 6, 2021, and he was consecrated on August 19, 2021.

His academic pursuits included studies at the Seat of Wisdom Seminary in Owerri for philosophy (1985-1989) and Bigard Memorial Seminary in Enugu for theology, culminating in a Doctorate in Philosophy from Marquette University, USA.

Throughout his ministry, Bishop Chukwu distinguished himself as spiritual father, a moral compass, and an embodiment of discipline and sacrificial leadership.
He was widely recognized for his calm wisdom, pastoral care, his remarkable ability to connect with people from all walks of life with equal compassion.

Bishop Chukwu’s passing leaves a significant void at a time when moral clarity and spiritual guidance are most needed in society.

The Minister, on behalf of his family and the Federal Ministry of Works, extended his deepest condolences to the Catholic faithful, the clergy and religious of the Diocese of Abakaliki, and the immediate and extended family of the late Bishop.
He described Bishop Chukwu’s passing as a “monumental loss” and emphasized that his legacy would remain a guiding light, etched in the lives he touched, the faith he strengthened, and the enduring impact of his ministry across Ebonyi State and beyond.

Governor Francis Nwifuru also mourned the Bishop, describing him as a steadfast advocate for justice, unity, and love.

The Minister concluded his message with a prayer for the repose of Bishop Chukwu’s soul and for strength and fortitude for all who mourn him.
