President Donald Trump announced today an extension of the United States’ ceasefire with Iran, a decision made at the request of Pakistani mediators.

The move delays potential U.S. military action, allowing more time for Tehran’s leadership to formulate a unified proposal to end the ongoing conflict.

Despite the extension, the US will maintain its naval blockade of Iranian ports and remain on high alert.

President Trump cited the “seriously fractured” nature of the Iranian govt as the primary reason for granting the extension.

Stating, “Based on the fact that the Govt of Iran is seriously fractured, not unexpectedly so and, upon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, of Pakistan, we have been asked to hold our Attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal.”

The ceasefire, initially a two-week truce agreed upon on April 8, was set to expire on Wednesday.
Trump’s announcement marks an abrupt reversal from his earlier stance, as he
had indicated just hours prior that he opposed extending the truce and warned Iran that time was running out before a significant U.S. attack on its infrastructure.

Despite the diplomatic reprieve, the U.S. naval blockade on Iranian ports will persist.

Trump explicitly directed the military to “continue the Blockade and, in all other respects, remain ready and able, and will therefore extend the Ceasefire until such time as their proposal is submitted, and discussions are concluded, one way or the other.”
This continued pressure highlights the U.S. demands for a complete shutdown of Iran’s nuclear program, limits on its missile production, and an end to its support for regional allies such as
Hezbollah and Hamas.

Iran, however, has consistently maintained its right to enrich uranium for a civilian nuclear program and has ruled out using its military capabilities and regional alliances as concessions.

Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Abbas Araghchi previously condemned the US naval blockade as an “act of war” and a violation of the existing ceasefire.
The assertion of a “fractured” Iranian leadership by President Trump has been met with skepticism by some.

Al Jazeera correspondent Ali Hashem reported from Tehran that Trump’s claim is likely a “misconception,” noting that Iran has a “very unified leadership” since the assassination of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on February 28.

Khamenei was succeeded by his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, and the team around him is described as a cohesive unit that has been working together for years.

Pakistan has played a crucial role in mediating the ceasefire while its Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude to US President for agreeing to prolong the truce, affirmed Islamabad’s commitment to a negotiated settlement.
A second round of talks is scheduled to take place in Islamabad. Barbara Slavin, a distinguished fellow at Stimson Center think tank, suggested that the Trump’s decision to extend the ceasefire might be a “way to cover the embarrassment” of faltering negotiations.

She noted that while Trump was willing to send US Vice President JD Vance to negotiate, Tehran did not appear ready to participate in the talks.

Slavin also emphasized Iran’s newfound leverage through its control of the Strait of Hormuz and urged US to “relinquish its maximalist demands” to facilitate a resolution.

As talks hang in the balance, the international community watches closely to see if this extended ceasefire will pave the way for a lasting peace or merely delay further escalation.
