On April 25, 2026, Mali experienced a series of coordinated terrorist attacks across multiple locations, including its capital, Bamako, and the northern city of Gao.

These acts of violence targeted military positions and civilian areas, resulting in at least 16 people wounded.

Malian defense and security forces successfully brought the situation under control, neutralizing several terrorists and thwarting broader attack plans.

Reports indicates that affiliates of al-Qaeda, specifically Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), and Tuareg rebels claimed responsibility for these assaults.

In the wake of these attacks, the international community swiftly condemned the violence and expressed solidarity with Mali.

The United States issued a statement strongly condemning the terrorist acts, extending its deepest condolences to the victims and their families, reaffirming its commitment to supporting peace, stability, and security in Mali and the broader Sahel region.
Similarly, the United Nations Secretary- General, António Guterres, expressed profound concern over the reports of attacks.

His spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, in a statement conveyed the Secretary- General’s strong condemnation of the violence, emphasizing the critical need to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.

UN Chief called for unified international support to address the escalating threat of violent extremism and terrorism in
the Sahel, and to meet the urgent humanitarian needs of the region.
He further reiterated his appeal for robust security coordination and collaboration among regional actors.

These coordinated attacks underscore the persistent security challenges faced by Mali and the Sahel region, highlighting the urgent need for sustained int’l cooperation to counter terrorism and foster lasting peace.

Meanwhile, latest report has said that escalations are still ongoing across Mali after this coordinated wave of attacks which hit multiple military targets nationwide.
Pressure remains high in Sévaré, Gao, and Kidal, with security conditions unstable following the April 25 offensive.

In Sévaré, movement is minimal and tension remains high after earlier clashes. Control is unclear.

In Gao, Malian forces and Russian backed units are holding key positions, but the situation remains tense with ongoing threats from insurgents.
In Kidal, armed group activity remains elevated, reinforcing fears of shifting control in the north.

In Bamako and Kati, calm holds under heavy security. A curfew is in place, streets are largely empty, and helicopter patrols continue. Authorities say the situation is under control, but no detailed briefing has been provided.

Uncertainty surrounds senior figures, including Sadio Camara and Assimi Goïta, with no confirmed public appearances since the attacks.

Despite official claims, the scale of the operation has exposed ongoing security gaps, and the situation remains fluid.
