Executive Summary

On the evening of April 25, 2026, a shooting occurred at the Washington Hilton hotel in Washington, D.C., during the annual White House Correspondents’ dinner.

The incident, which took place near the main security screening area, prompted the immediate evacuation of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and several Cabinet members.

A suspect, identified as a 31-year-old man from California, was apprehended at the scene. One law enforcement officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries after being struck in their bullet-resistant vest.

The event, attended by approximately 2,600 guests, was subsequently canceled and is expected to be rescheduled.

Background and Security Context

The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) annual dinner is a high-profile event traditionally attended by the sitting president, members of the press, and various dignitaries.

The 2026 dinner marked the first time Donald Trump attended the event as a
sitting president, having declined invitations during his first term.
Given the concentration of senior government officials, security at the event was described by former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe as being “almost on the level of a national
security event”.

The United States Secret Service, in coordination with partner agencies,
had organized extensive security measures, including magnetometer screening areas.

However, the lobby of the Washington Hilton regularly remains open to other guests during the dinner, with the primary security perimeter located closer to the ballroom.
The Incident

At approximately 8:40 p.m. EDT, while dinner was being served inside the main ballroom, a suspect confronted security personnel near the main magnetometer screening area outside the banquet hall.

The individual ran past the security checkpoint and fired at least one shot. CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, who was situated outside the main ballroom, reported being only a few feet away from the gunman.

Blitzer described the shooter as firing what appeared to be “a very serious weapon” at least six times before being tackled and subdued by police.
Secret Service agents immediately alerted attendees inside the venue, yelling “shots fired,” led to widespread panic as many of the roughly 2,600 attendees took cover under their tables.

The suspect was prevented from entering the ballroom and was taken into custody at the scene by law enforcement.

During the altercation, one law enforcement officer was struck in their bullet-resistant vest but is expected to make a full recovery. No other injuries were reported.
Evacuation and Immediate Response

Following the gunfire, President Trump, who was seated at the head table on the stage, was swiftly surrounded by Secret Service agents and escorted off the stage. Armed guards in tactical gear secured the dais.

The First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, and other Cabinet members were also evacuated from the ballroom and moved to secure holding areas within the hotel.

President Trump remained in a secure area inside the hotel while officials assessed the situation.
At approximately 9:45 p.m. EDT, after law enforcement requested that all attendees leave the venue, the President departed the Washington Hilton for the White
House.

Suspect Profile and Motive

The suspected criminal was taken into custody near magnetometer screening area. Authorities recovered a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives from the individual.

Media reports identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old man from California. According to social media posts attributed to the suspect, he is a teacher and an amateur video game developer.
Preliminary reports indicate that the suspect told law enforcement he was attempting to assassinate officials from the Trump administration.

The US Attorney Jeanine Pirro stated that the suspect would face the preliminary charges of “using a firearm during a crime of violence, and assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon”.

Interim Washington, D.C., police chief Jeffery Carroll noted that investigators
believe the suspect was staying at the Washington Hilton as a guest.
Aftermath and Reactions

Shortly after 9:00 p.m. EDT, WHCA president Weijia Jiang addressed the attendees, initially hoping the program would continue.

However, by 9:20 p.m. EDT, security personnel began clearing the ballroom, effectively canceling the event. The dinner is expected to be rescheduled within 30 days.

President Trump addressed the incident on Truth Social, praising swift response of the Secret Service and law enforcement.
He confirmed that the First Lady, Vice President, and Cabinet members were safe.

International leaders, including the Prime Ministers of Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom, as well as the President of France, condemned the shooting as an act of political violence and expressed relief that the attendees were unharmed.

This unfortunate incident has sparked renewed discussions regarding the security of high-profile political events and the increasingly tense political climate in the United States.
