The All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State for allegedly inciting violence by invoking bloody history of “Operation Wetie” during a summit of opposition political parties in Ibadan.
The ruling party described Makinde’s comments as reckless and a clear and present threat to peace and national security.
In a press statement released on April 26, 2026, signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, APC expressed deep concern that a sitting Governor, who is constitutionally responsible as the Chief Security Officer of his state, would reference such a dark period of political violence in Nigeria’s history to threaten the people and government.
The party asserted that Makinde’s incitement to violence renders him
unworthy of his high office.
The APC warned that Makinde’s rhetoric should not be dismissed as mere opposition posturing, as it risks fueling anarchy, murderous rage, widespread lawlessness that could undermine national stability.
The party called on all relevant security and intelligence agencies to take the development seriously and act to safeguard lives, property, and Nigeria’s democratic order.
The statement further reminded the Governor that constitutional immunity from prosecution does not extend to accountability for threats or acts against national security.
The APC emphasized that no individual, regardless of their position, should have the power to endanger the lives and safety of Nigerians or disrupt country’s democratic governance under the guise of political commentary.
Furthermore, the APC rejected attempts by opposition leaders to attribute their internal disarray to alarmist narratives about a supposed one-party domination.
The party argued that opposition parties are suffering from self-inflicted wounds due to anti-democratic practices, poor leadership, internal conflicts, disregard for due process, persistent factionalization, and the desperate presidential ambitions of their leaders.
Specifically, the APC cited the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s destruction by Atiku Abubakar’s alleged ruthless confiscation of the 2023 presidential ticket, and the Labour Party (LP)’s subversion by Mr. Peter Obi’s “restless nomadic disposition.”
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) was described as “stillborn” due to the “reckless robbery” of its leadership by “marauding opposition figures.”
The APC concluded by stating its confidence that Nigerians are discerning and recognize that parties unable to manage their internal affairs cannot be entrusted with national governance.
The party further reiterated commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, upholding the rule of law, and delivering on the Renewed Hope Agenda under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
