Veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died after battling advanced, stage-four cancer, according to reports citing his family and multiple industry sources.

Hassan reportedly died at about 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026. His daughter, Kira Hassan, confirmed the news during an emotional live broadcast after the family had spent days seeking medical help for the ailing actor.

The development came only days after Hassan’s daughters, Kira and Lima Taiwo, appealed to doctors, colleagues and well-wishers for urgent assistance. Punch reported that the family had been told chemotherapy could no longer be administered because of the severity of his condition.

Although reports consistently link his death to his battle with stage-four cancer, no public medical statement reviewed for this report provides a more specific immediate cause of death.

It is therefore more accurate to say that Hassan died after an illness amid a battle with advanced cancer, rather than speculate about an unconfirmed terminal complication.

The announcement triggered condolences from prominent Nigerian political figures.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, in a condolence message shared following the announcement, described Hassan as more than a gifted actor, praising his ability to entertain, educate and inspire social renewal.

Atiku expressed sympathy to the actor’s
family, colleagues and admirers and prayed that Allah forgive Hassan’s shortcomings and grant him eternal rest in Al-Jannah Firdaus.

Senator Solomon Adeola, the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Ogun State, called Hassan’s death “a monumental loss to the creative and entertainment industry.”

Adeola described the actor as a brother, supporter and committed advocate for
Ogun State and Nigeria.

He praised Hassan’s filmmaking and positive advocacy, pledged continued support to the bereaved family and prayed for the actor’s peaceful repose.

Adeola’s tribute deepened a wave of public mourning around the actor, with political leaders and admirers remembering not only Hassan’s screen performances but also his wider influence in society.

The Lagos State through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture also mourned the passing of the veteran actor, cultural icon, and distinguished ambassador of Yoruba heritage.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson- Awoyinka, who extends the management and staff’s heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Nollywood and creative arts community.

The Commissioner said, “Taiwo Hassan was more than an actor. He was a custodian of culture, a gifted storyteller, and a proud ambassador of Yoruba heritage.

“Through his remarkable career, he entertained generations while showcasing and preserving the Yoruba rich cultural values on stage and screen. He dedicated many years to promoting Yoruba culture, theatre, and the entertainment industry.

His contributions to the creative sector helped shape the cultural landscape of Lagos State and Nigeria, leaving a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come”.

The statement added that the Ministry commiserates with his family, the Nollywood community, and all those who were touched by his talent, passion, and warmth. His departure is a great loss to the creative and cultural community.

“We pray that Almighty God grants his soul eternal rest and gives his family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones the strength and fortitude to bear this irreplaceable loss”, Mrs. Benson- Awoyinka stated.

Together, the tributes portrayed Ogogo as a cultural figure whose work crossed the boundaries of entertainment, community advocacy and public life.

The Nollywood community had rallied around Hassan before his death. Several actors held a special prayer session as concern over his condition intensified, while veteran actor Jide Kosoko joined appeals for prayers and support. Kosoko later announced funeral arrangements.

According to P.M. News, Hassan’s remains were to be taken to his home- town, Ilaro, Ogun State, for a lying -in-state ceremony, with burial prayers announced by the Ilaro Muslim Community.

Best of Nollywood founder Seun Oloketuyi also confirmed the death. In a post cited by Punch, he wrote: “Taiwo Hassan Ogogo is dead. He finally lost the battle of life.”

The reactions from colleagues reflected the depth of Hassan’s standing in Yorubalanguage cinema.

For many actors, he was not simply a co-star but a senior figure whose career helped sustain a generation of Nigerian screen storytelling.

For decades, Hassan used Yoruba- language cinema and television to bring humour, drama and social commentary into Nigerian homes.

His performances reflected the tensions, hopes and contradictions of everyday society, making him a beloved figure far beyond the screen.

His death leaves a deep void in Nollywood and in the hearts of the millions who grew up watching him.

For his family, colleagues and admirers, Ogogo’s final curtain falls not simply as the end of an acting career, but as the loss of a cultural voice whose work helped define an era of Nigerian storytelling.

Key details “His passing leaves a painful void in Nigeria’s creative community and in the hearts of millions who cherished his work.” — Atiku Abubakar, in his condolence messages.
