The African Union (AU) has issued a stern condemnation following a brazen terrorist attack on Niamey International Airport on June 18, 2026.

The assault, claimed by Al Qaeda’s local affiliate, JNIM, marks the second time this year that the capital’s primary aviation hub has been targeted.

In an official statement, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, expressed profound condemnation for the strike.

He extended sincere condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Niger, while commending swift response of the Nigerien Defense and Security Forces.

Their actions were instrumental in repelling the attackers and securing the facility before further damage could occur.

The June 18th attack involved early- morning explosions and sustained gunfire that sent residents in nearby neighborhoods into hiding.

While official casualty figures for this
specific incident are being finalized, the attack underscores a persistent threat to the capital.

A similar assault in January 2026, claimed by an Islamic State affiliate, resulted in significant casualties and damage to civilian aircraft.

Niger continues to face a complex security environment, with jihadist groups linked to both Al Qaeda and the Islamic State operating across borders with Mali and Burkina Faso.

The Chairperson reaffirmed the African Union’s unwavering solidarity with Niger, reiterating the AU’s commitment to supporting regional efforts to preserve peace and stability.

The following text below summarizes the key details of recent security incidents at Niamey International Airport.

June 18, 2026 attack was claimed by the JNIM (Al Qaeda affiliate) and primary target was Niamey International Airport while security response repelled by the Nigerien Forces, the impact was facilities secured; area cordoned.

January 29, 2026 Attack was claimed by
the Islamic State Sahel Province and primary target was the Airport and the Military Airbase while security response repelled by Nigerien Forces, the impact was 11 soldiers killed; aircraft damage.

Chairperson Youssouf concluded by emphasizing that the African Union remains steadfast in its fight against violent extremism, pledging continued support for Niger’s sovereignty and security.
