The Federal Government has reaffirmed dedication to enhancing infrastructure within Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, with the Federal University Dutse (FUD) poised to benefit from strategic collaborations and inter-agency support.
This commitment was articulated by the Honourable Minister of State for Works, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, during a recent meeting with a delegation from FUD.
On April 14, 2026, Minister Goronyo hosted Professor Ahmad Mohammad Gumel, the ViceChancellor of Federal University Dutse, and his team at his office in Mabushi, Abuja.
The visit aimed to solicit federal intervention for critical infrastructure and academic expansion at the university, which, despite its relatively young age, is evolving into a hub of academic excellence.
Professor Gumel highlighted FUD’s ambitious plans to establish Faculties of Engineering and Environmental Sciences, crucial for addressing technical education gaps in Jigawa State and the broader region.
However, he underscored that the realization of this vision is contingent upon targeted government support.
The Vice-Chancellor also detailed
significant infrastructural challenges plaguing the institution, including severe shortage of student accommodation, inadequate power supply, deficiencies in internal road and water systems.
With a student population exceeding 20,000 and fewer than 3,000 available
bed spaces, many students are forced to reside off-campus, raising concerns about their security and welfare.
Professor Gumel advocated for sustainable energy solutions, specifically solar-powered electrification, to mitigate persistent power outages and enhance campus safety.
In response, Minister Goronyo commended FUD’s proactive approach to development and conveyed the goodwill of the Honourable Minister of Works, Engr. David Nweze Umahi.
He reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to inclusive infrastructure development as a key driver of national growth.
While acknowledging that the 2026 budget cycle had concluded, the Minister assured the delegation that the Ministry
would actively explore potential intervention avenues, particularly in road infrastructure, to improve accessibility and support FUD’s expansion efforts.
Furthermore, Minister Goronyo advised the university to engage closely with relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to leverage existing federal programmes.
He specifically recommended collaboration with the Rural Electrification Agency for solar energy solutions, citing its proven track record in delivering off-grid power projects to tertiary institutions nationwide.
He also encouraged engagement with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation for sustainable water supply, offering to facilitate necessary linkages.
The Minister also expressed a personal interest in the establishment of a Faculty of Law at FUD, given his legal background.
Concluding the meeting, Minister Goronyo urged FUD’s management to foster stronger institutional partnerships and adopt a multi-sectoral approach to accelerate growth and enhance service delivery within the university.
The meeting saw the presence of key
officials, like Engr. Sunusi Abdulqadir, Special Assistant (Technical) to the Honourable Minister.
And members of the Vice-Chancellor’s delegation, such as Professor Alhassan Abubakar Mijinyawa (Deputy Vice- Chancellor), Mallam Hassan Balarebe (Bursar), and Abdullahi Y. Bello (Director of Public Affairs).
