In a strategic move to bolster national security and foster the enduring peace, President Bola Tinubu has initiated a deepened partnership with the Vatican, leveraging interfaith dialogue as a critical tool to address Nigeria’s complex challenges.

This pivotal engagement was highlighted during a recent meeting in Abuja with Archbishop Paul R. Gallagher, the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States and International Organisations.

Tinubu’s administration is firmly committed to prioritizing interfaith dialogue, recognizing it as the “only path” to effectively navigate and resolve the nation’s security issues.

The meeting, facilitated by Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, underscored a shared vision between Abuja and the Vatican for promoting harmony and tolerance among Nigeria’s diverse religious communities.

Drawing on a long-standing personal relationship with the Catholic Church, cultivated during his tenure as governor of Lagos, President Tinubu emphasized the Church’s significant contributions to education and health.

He recalled his decisive policy to return
mission schools to religious institutions, a move that not only reversed historical injustices from military administrations but also affirmed his belief in the Church’s vital role in societal development and stability.

The President also conveyed his profound respect for Pope Leo XIV, acknowledging the Pope’s global efforts in promoting peace and expressing a keen desire to host him in Nigeria.

This invitation signifies a recognition of the spiritual influence the Holy See wields, which President Tinubu believes can be instrumental in unifying a nation grappling with internal divisions.

In discussions with Archbishop Gallagher, President Tinubu detailed his administration’s multifaceted approach to ensuring religious harmony and national security.

He highlighted increased resource allocation to the military, intensified surveillance in previously ungoverned areas, and significant investments in youth development programs designed
to prevent radicalization and exploitation by extremist groups.

These measures, he asserted, are crucial for sustaining recent gains against insecurity and preventing setbacks.

Archbishop Gallagher, on his part, underscored Nigeria’s strategic importance to the Catholic Church, particularly given its vibrant Catholic community.

His visit, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and the Holy See, served to reinforce these ties.

He conveyed Pope Leo XIV’s appreciation for President Tinubu’s presence at his inauguration and commended Nigeria’s efforts in promoting peace, particularly through military initiatives.
