The United Nations has expressed concerns over the recent exchange of fire along the Blue Line and recent reported attacks from the Southern Lebanon while called to avoid further escalation of crisis between the Israeli forces and Palestinian militants group.
UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres who made this known during a Press Briefing on Wednesday appealed to all parties – and those who have an influence over those parties — to avoid any further escalation and spillover.
Recall that Israel declared war on the Palestinian militant group Hamas after it carried out an unprecedented attack by air, sea and land on Saturday.
It was reported that as of Tuesday evening, more than 1,000 Israelis, including foreign nationals, were killed and at least 2,806 people were injured, according to the Israeli Ministry of Health.
The Ministry of Health in Gaza said at least 830 Palestinians have been killed and 4,250 injured.
Over a tenth of the population in Gaza, more than 260,000 people, have been displaced since the start of the current conflict on 7 October and the numbers are rising fast.
UNRWA on Wednesday reported that the death toll among its employees had risen to nine. The agency has repeatedly stressed the importance of protecting civilians, including in conflict.
UNRWA is a lifeline for most of the roughly two million Palestine refugees in Gaza, providing essential services such as education and healthcare. The conflict has forced the closure of its 14 food distribution centres as well as a reduction in operations.
UN Chief who called for the immediate release of all Israeli hostages held in Gaza, said civilians must be protected at all times and the international humanitarian law must be respected and upheld.
Guterres said, “About 220,000 Palestinians are now sheltering in 92 UNRWA facilities across Gaza. UN premises and all hospitals, schools and clinics must never be targeted.
He added that UN staff are working around the clock to support the people of Gaza while the UN Chief expressed deep regret that some of the staff have already paid the ultimate price.
Guterres said further that crucial life-saving supplies – including fuel, food and water — must be allowed into Gaza. “We need rapid and unimpeded humanitarian access now”, the UN Boss added.
He thanked the Egypt for its constructive engagement to facilitate humanitarian access through the Rafah crossing and to make the El Arish airport available for critical assistance.
