What should have been a vital economic artery connecting Northern Nigeria to the bustling markets of the South was reduced to a no-go zone.
Bandits and highwaymen hijacked the route, isolating communities, stifling agricultural trade, and leaving farmers trapped in fear on their ancestral lands.
The journey was not merely measured in miles, but in the constant threat to life and livelihood. But on a Monday morning in August 2026, the rumble of heavy machinery at the Afaka Mando Arena in Kaduna State signaled a profound shift.
The Federal Government officially
flagged off the reconstruction of the Kaduna (Mando)‒Birnin Gwari Road, marking the end of an era of isolation.
The Honorable Minister of Works, Senator Engr. David Umahi, stood
before the gathered crowd to officially launch the project, describing it as a strategic economic corridor and a cornerstone of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Paving the Way: From Peril to Promise in the North,” was the unspoken theme of the ceremony, as the Minister laid out a vision where asphalt and engineering serve as formidable weapons against the nation’s most pressing crises.
“We are using this road infrastructure to fix the economic problems we met on the ground, we are using road infrastructure to fight the insecurity we met on the ground, we are using road building to fight hunger we met on the ground,” Umahi declared, his voice ringing with conviction.
He emphasized that the road would incorporate modern infrastructure features, including solar-powered street lighting and tree planting, aligning with the Ministry’s commitment to sustainable, climate-resilient development.
The 122-kilometer project is a strategic lifeline. According to the Minister, it represents the shortest route connecting Northern Nigeria to Lagos, seamlessly linking through Niger, Kwara, Osun, and Oyo.
It is an artery that promises to pump life back into the commercial heart of the country by reducing travel time and vehicle maintenance costs.
The project was awarded to Messrs. J. Patel & Sons (Nigeria) Limited, with a completion period of 24 months.
The Managing Director of the construction company, Mr. Urmil
Jagadish Patel, commended the Minister for introducing innovative engineering methods, such as Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP), which will ensure a durable, world-class highway.
He assured the public that equipment and engineers have already been mobilized to the site, and that the project will create employment opportunities for hundreds of local youths.
Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, echoed this sentiment of fulfillment.
He recalled the President’s visit to Birnin Gwari during the 2023 electioneering period—a trip undertaken despite severe security risks—where a promise was made to restore both the road and lasting peace. Today, that promise is materializing.
The Governor noted that improved security along the axis has already
enabled farmers to return to their farmlands and businesses to resume operations, further strengthening trade and agriculture.
The impact of this infrastructure is already rippling through the local communities. The Emir of Birnin Gwari, His Royal Highness Alhaji Zubairu Jibril Mai Gwari II, spoke of a quiet revolution taking place in the fields.
He thanked the President for fulfilling his campaign promises, noting that the project is an economic lifeline that will reconnect communities and restore hope to the people of Birnin Gwari.
As the ceremony concluded, the focus shifted to the broader horizon of infrastructural renaissance in the region.
With other critical projects like the Abuja‒Kaduna‒Zaria‒Kano Expressway, the Zaria-Funtua-Gusau-Sokoto Road, and a newly approved 50-kilometer internal light rail project for Kaduna State, the North stands on the precipice of a new era.
