MURIC clarifies name over controversial Group statement

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has issued a press statement clarifying that a recent controversial statement made in conjunction with a Fulani group.

Adding that the statement was released by a similarly named organization, the Amalgamated Muslim Rights Concern
(AMURIC), and not by MURIC itself.

In a statement signed by Mallam Ibrahim Agunbiade, Secretary of MURIC’s Oyo State Chapter, emphasized the need to differentiate between the two Islamic groups due to their very similar names.

MURIC stated that it has been operating under its current name since 1994 and is officially registered, making a name change for them difficult.

The clarification became necessary due to a significant difference in opinion regarding the content of AMURIC’s statement, particularly its inclusion of respected Yoruba leaders such as Chief Sunday Igboho, former Ekiti Governor Chief Ayodele Fayose, and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.

MURIC affirmed its stance that the Yoruba people, like all other ethnic groups in Nigeria, possess the inalienable right to self-defense against bandits and terrorists.

The organization supports the mobilization of youth by Yoruba leaders to achieve this objective.

Furthermore, MURIC believes that bandits encroaching upon Yorubaland should face severe consequences from both security agencies and civilian vigilante groups, including Amotekun, Oduduwa People’s Congress (OPC), and Iru Ekun.

While acknowledging AMURIC as a sister Islamic organization comprising respected individuals, MURIC urged its leadership to adopt a distinctly different name to prevent future confusion and misrepresentation of statements issued by either organization.

MURIC concluded by reiterating its complete dissociation from yesterday’s statement, asserting that it had no prior knowledge or involvement in its release.
