The Surveyor General of the Federation (SGOF) Abduganiyu Adebomehin has said that his main objective will be to remap Nigeria in line with the United Nation recommendation for every city of the world so as to foster development.

Adebomehin made the remark during an interview session with a reporter who came to congratulate him on his extension of tenure of office on Thursday.

While commenting on his area of concentration for the next two years, SGOF said “my focus and objective will be to remap Nigeria for accelerated development in line with the United Nations recommendation and Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr President”.

He said “the location of schools all over the country both public and private, number of hospitals per state and their specializations, farms, markets, volatile areas and so on can easily be known through a well mapped system.

“And this is what we intend to do with National Geospatial Data Infrastructure in Nigeria, meaning whatever you have in digital format , keep it in the server for easier access“

In a statement released from his office, Adebomehin further said, “it is only when we map Nigeria, we define the country including internationally boundaries like Cameroon, Benin Republic and Niger imagine the number of changes to roads and others since the last time Nigeria was mapped in the 70s, mapping will be our primary objective even that is the only thing we are able to achieve for the remaining years”.
SGOF added, “Surveying is so crucial that it takes a cautious mind to do because in construction of roads and so on, you need it and it is found in so many fields including the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

“Despite the fact that computer is having greater influence on surveying, Geodesy remains an important aspect of Survey and Geodesy is the science of measuring and understanding Earth’s size, shape, orientation in space, and gravity field especially the movement of the earth.

When asked the challenges in mapping Nigeria, SGOF said, “Funding is the major problem despite the recommendations by the UN that every capital city must be mapped at every three years, and also recommend a very large scale mapping so that some information will not be suppressed.
“I can assure you that no matter what you spend on mapping, you’ll gain it back, if not for anything, when you talk about education, economic and deliverance of good governance. If I had the opportunity today, I will start to remap the country immediately”, he concluded.
