The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has dismissed a viral video alleging a breach of Nigeria’s National Identification Number (NIN) database, describing the claim as false, unfounded and recycled.
In a statement issued on September 23, 2026, NIMC said the video was based on a news report from 2024 that had already been officially disclaimed.
The Commission stressed that its National Identity Database has not been breached or compromised.
NIMC said it operates a robust, multi-layered security infrastructure designed to protect the personal information of Nigerian citizens and legal residents in line with international best practices.
The Commission urged Nigerians to disregard the video, warning that the circulation of unverified claims could create unnecessary panic.
It advised members of the public to rely only on NIMC’s official website and verified social media platforms for information about the national identity system.
Highlighting recent measures to strengthen data protection, NIMC pointed to the launch of NIN Authentication, or NINAuth—a suite of web, API and mobile verification services designed to improve privacy, secure identity checks and reduce the need to expose raw NIN details.
According to the Commission, NINAuth requires the explicit consent of NIN holders before their information is shared for Know Your Customer procedures or other verification purposes.
The platform is intended to support secure identity verification for services including SIM registration, passport and immigration processing, tax filings and financial transactions.
NIMC said the initiative reflects its obligations under the NIMC Act, 2026, and the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, both of which require the fair, lawful and transparent handling of personal data.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the identity information of Nigerians and legal residents, while working with security and other relevant agencies to combat misinformation and strengthen public confidence in the national identity system.
