A tragic canoe mishap has claimed lives and left dozens missing in Malamawa village, Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The devastating accident occurred on
Sunday, July 19, 2026, when a wooden canoe carrying approximately forty passengers capsized while crossing a river.
The reports gathered that the victims were predominantly women and children, many of whom were local farmers and agricultural laborers returning from their fields at the end of the day.
The Jigawa State Police Command confirmed the incident, with the spokesperson SP Shi’isu Lawan Adam stating that security personnel, emergency responders, and local volunteers have been working tirelessly to search for the missing victims.
As of Monday, July 20, rescue teams had successfully saved 15 individuals and recovered six bodies. However, 34 passengers remain unaccounted for as frantic search operations continue.
Jigawa State Commissioner for Special Duties, Auwal Sankara, assured affected families that the government has mobilized all available resources.
“The rescue mission will continue until every victim has been accounted for,” he stated, pledging that emergency teams from the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) alongside local divers will not rest until the operation is complete.
The tragedy in Ringim LGA is the latest in a distressing pattern of fatal boat accidents that have become all too common in Nigeria, particularly in riverine communities during the
rainy season.

routinely ignored.
In the wake of this incident, political figures and community leaders have expressed their condolences.
The tragic loss of life has reignited urgent calls for stricter enforcement of
passenger limits, the compulsory use of life jackets, and better regulation of inland water transport.
Furthermore, there are renewed appeals for the federal and state governments to provide safer transportation alternatives for residents who currently have no practical option but to cross rivers daily.
