Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has initiated thorough investigation into the cause of the mechanical failure of an elevator that killed a doctor, Vwaere Diaso at the General hospital in Lagos.
Sanwo-Olu who expressed deep sadness after hearing the tragedy loss of the medical professional on Wednesday said as a parent himself, he cannot help but feel the pain and sorrow that Dr. Diaso’s loved ones must be experiencing during this difficult time.
According to him, “I was deeply saddened to hear about the tragic loss of Dr. Vwaere Diaso, a dedicated medical professional whose life was taken due to a mechanical failure within the elevator at the Doctors quarters of the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island.
“It is distressing to think that such a promising young doctor had her life cut short in such a devastating manner”, the Governor said.
He added, “I have taken immediate action to initiate thorough investigation into the cause of the mechanical failure.
“It is my sincere commitment that this investigation will be conducted with utmost transparency and fairness, leaving no room for any biases or favoritism”, Sanwo-Olu said.
Lagos Governor consoled deceased family, saying, “My heart goes out to her parents, family members, friends, and colleagues who are grieving this profound loss”.
He extended his deepest sympathies to the Nigeria Medical Association, the Medical Guild, and all doctors in Lagos State, the Governor said, “Losing fellow professional is a tremendous loss for the entire medical community”.
“Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this heartbreaking incident. May Dr. Vwaere Diaso’s soul rest in eternal peace”, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said.
It was reported that Diaso died on Tuesday at the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos, after she was trapped in the elevator for more than 40 minutes before she was rescued, and there was no blood available to resuscitate her.
Her death sparked outrage with her colleagues staging a protest and grounding health services at the aforementioned hospital.
The Nigerian Medical Association, Lagos State chapter declared a five -day mourning period in the state and asked doctors in other government -owned hospitals to scale down activities as a mark of respect for their dead colleague.
The hospitals who embarked on indefinite strike are the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos; Lagos Island Maternity Hospital, Lagos, and the Massey Street Children’s Hospital, Lagos.
