In a room thick with the weight of national expectation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stood before the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) on Tuesday, issuing a stark and resolute vow: “Prosperity is on the horizon, and we are stabilizing the nation.”
The meeting, held at the State House in Abuja, was more than a diplomatic courtesy; it was a strategic alignment between the secular head of state and the moral compass of the nation.
Led by CBCN President and Archbishop of Kaduna, Most Rev. Matthew Ndagoso, the delegation of 19 bishops arrived bearing the collective anxieties of millions of Nigerians grappling with insecurity, economic hardship, and the quest for a sustainable future.
A Pledge to the Frontlines
Tinubu did not shy away from the harsh realities plaguing the country. Acknowledging the devastating impacts of terrorism, banditry, and kidnappings, the President unveiled a sweeping overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture.
He assured the spiritual leaders that the govt is repositioning its institutions for maximum efficiency, armed with enhanced intelligence gathering, improved logistical support, and a renewed focus on the welfare of frontline personnel.
“We don’t have another country but here—this Nigeria,” Tinubu declared, his voice echoing with determination. “We are getting more equipment, building new barracks. We will defeat terrorism. It should be part of your sermons.”
In a direct appeal to the clergy, the President called upon them to actively condemn violent attacks and guide their congregations to support the govt’s relentless fight against insurgency.
He framed the struggle not merely as a military campaign, but as a spiritual
duty to preserve the homeland.
The Economics of Hope
Beyond the battlefields, the President addressed the economic turbulence that has defined recent years. Rejecting the narratives of impending bankruptcy and uncertainty, Tinubu presented a picture of recovery and stabilization.
He pointed to concrete interventions,
such as the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), and the recent approval for the expansion of the armed forces and new university admissions.
“I have listened to you carefully,” he told the bishops, addressing their primary concerns of security and education. “The alarm for bankruptcy and the dark tunnel of uncertainty that we had when I came in has been changed. The economy has been delivered from bankruptcy.”
Crucially, the President highlighted the resolution of the recurring strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), framing it as a tangible victory for the country’s youth.
“Is that not an answer to our prayers?” he asked rhetorically, emphasizing the govt’s commitment to sustained educational access and poverty alleviation.
A Legacy of Democratic Faith
The dialogue was reciprocal. Archbishop Ndagoso, himself a veteran of Nigeria’s prodemocracy struggles during the dark days of military dictatorship, laid out the bishops’ core concerns.
These included the pressing need for credible elections, fair treatment for all
worshipers, and the potential return of mission schools—a cause close to the President’s heart, given his own track record in Lagos State.
As the delegation prepared to depart, the Archbishop challenged the President to cement his legacy through strengthening of democratic institutions. “Your greatest legacy would be the strengthening of our democratic institutions,” Ndagoso urged, calling for free and fair elections in 2027.
Tinubu responded with quiet confidence, affirming the neutrality of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and dismissing fears of electoral intimidation.
As the dust settled in the State House, the message was clear: the government and the church are now bound by a shared mandate. The path to prosperity may be steep, but as President Tinubu promised the clergy, the foundation has been laid, and the horizon is beginning to brighten.
