Nigeria’s creative community is mourning the death of Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, who died on 16 September 2026 at the age of 84.
His family announced the passing and appealed for privacy as it grieves the loss of a husband, father and national cultural figure.
Jacobs leaves behind more than a long list of screen credits. He leaves an example of what professional acting can do for a country’s identity. Through theatre, television and film, he gave Nigerian characters authority, complexity and dignity.
His voice, restraint and commanding presence made him one of the most recognisable actors in Africa and earned him the affectionate description, used by his family, of “The Lion of Lufodo.”
A career built across continents
Born on 11 July 1942, Jacobs trained at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He worked in British television and international film before becoming a central figure in Nigeria’s modern film industry.
His career lasted more than five decades and crossed the boundaries between stage performance, television drama and cinema.
He appeared in productions including The Dogs of War, Pirates, My Kingdom, Covert Operation and One Fine Day. Yet his importance cannot be measured only by individual titles.
Jacobs was part of the generation that helped establish the authority of Nigerian screen acting before Nollywood became a global cultural brand.
He brought theatrical discipline to popular entertainment and showed that commercial success did not have to
come at the expense of craft.
His achievements were recognised with major honours. He received the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011, the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards in 2013 and the Africa Movie Academy Awards’ Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.
Jacobs also invested in the industry beyond acting. Together with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, he was associated with the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts.
Those institutions reflected a wider commitment to production, training
and the professional development of Nigeria’s creative sector.
The tributes: a nation recognises an institution
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described Olu Jacobs as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished actors and “a towering figure” whose career reached across theatre, television and film.
The President said Jacobs helped develop and professionalise the entertainment industry and inspired generations of actors and filmmakers through talent, discipline and dedication.
In a particularly telling tribute, Tinubu called him “a giant of the Nigerian creative industry” and said his death was a loss to Nigeria, African film and the global community of performing-arts lovers.
He added that Jacobs’ body of work would continue to speak to
generations yet unborn.
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar called Jacobs “an institution, a cultural icon and one of the finest ambassadors of our creative spirit.”
Atiku said the actor had helped lay
the foundations on which an entire industry was built, giving life to Nigerian stories and inspiring younger performers.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo described Jacobs as a consummate actor, a quintessential professional, a legend of the stage and “a god of the screen.”
Actors, entertainers and fans also remembered his warmth, unmistakable voice, professionalism and ability to make every performance memorable.
The Actors Guild of Nigeria said the country had lost a colossus of African film.
Its national president, Abubakar Yakubu, described Jacobs as an icon, mentor and father figure whose excellence allowed later generations to walk more boldly.
The Guild’s tribute captured the
central truth of Jacobs’ career: he did not merely build a personal reputation; he helped build an industry.
More than a farewell
The public grief surrounding Jacobs’ death reflects the unusual reach of his work. He was familiar to audiences in homes, cinemas and theatres, but he was also respected by colleagues as a standard-bearer for seriousness and preparation.
In an industry often judged by its speed and volume, Jacobs represented patience, presence and command. His later years were marked by ill health, and he largely withdrew from public life.
In 2021, Joke Silva disclosed that he had been diagnosed with Dementia with Lewy bodies. The disclosure also exposed the cruelty of repeated death rumours, which the family had previously been forced to correct.
The most fitting response to his death is therefore not simply to recall the roles he played. It is to protect the values his career embodied: rigorous training, respect for audiences, investment in young talent and the conviction that Nigerian stories deserve world-class
treatment.
Olu Jacobs has left the stage, but the standard he set remains. Nigeria should honour him not only with tributes, but by strengthening the creative institutions and professional culture that he spent his life helping to build.
