The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) continues to be a cornerstone of national integration and development, a sentiment strongly echoed by past leaders of the
scheme during recent courtesy visits from the incumbent Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu.

These interactions, as stated in a statement underscore the enduring legacy of the NYSC and its pivotal role in fostering unity and progress across Nigeria.

Major General Johnson Olawunmi (Rtd), who served as Director-General from Jan 2014 to April 2016, affirmed scheme’s continued relevance, highlighting its consistent adherence to its founding ideals despite various challenges.

The ex-DG lauded the Scheme’s significant achievements in community development, crucial interventions in
national programs, and its success in promoting unity and cultural integration.

He emphasized that these contributions have solidified the NYSC’s position as a vital national instrument, effectively bridging religious, socio-economic, and cultural divides.

During his interaction with General Nafiu, Olawunmi commended the exceptional qualities of the NYSC staff, urging the current leadership to leverage their potential for effective governance.
General Nafiu, in turn, acknowledged Olawunmi’s tenacity and determination
during his tenure, specifically hailing the introduction of the Health Initiative for
Rural Dwellers (HIRD) program and e-registration for Corps Members.

In a separate engagement, Reverend Peter Okuromade, who led the Scheme from January to March 2002, advocated for a moral rebirth among Corps Members.

He stressed the importance of exposing them to the principles of responsible citizenship, particularly during orientation periods, to adequately prepare them for future leadership roles.
Okuromade praised General Nafiu’s leadership qualities and his commitment to the welfare.of both staff and Corps Members.

Further reinforcing the scheme’s impact, Major General Suleiman Kazaure (Rtd), DirectorGeneral from April 2016 to October 2019, commended the NYSC’s substantial contributions to national unity, development, job creation, youth mentorship, and empowerment.

Kazaure urged General Nafiu to strengthen collaborations with relevant stakeholders to ensure the security of Corps Members and officials, especially those serving as ad-hoc staff during and after the 2027 general elections.
He also offered his continued support and advice, stating, “You are doing very well, keep it up. I am proud of you.”

General Nafiu, acknowledging the collective wisdom and efforts of his predecessors, expressed commitment to building upon their legacies.

The visits highlight a unified vision among NYSC leadership, past and present, for a scheme that remains vital to Nigeria’s future.
