A wave of diplomatic fury has erupted following the release of a controversial video showing Israel’s National Security Minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, taunting
detained humanitarian activists.
The European Union has joined a chorus of international condemnation, calling the treatment of the “Global Sumud Flotilla” participants “completely unacceptable.”
The incident began earlier this week when the Israeli Navy intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla—a humanitarian mission carrying aid to Gaza—in international waters near Cyprus.
While the interception itself drew criticism, it was the subsequent behavior of high-ranking Israeli officials at the Ashdod port that sparked a full-blown diplomatic crisis.
The Video That Shook the World
In a video shared by Minister Ben-Gvir himself on social media, the far-right minister is seen walking among dozens of activists who are handcuffed and forced to kneel on the deck of a vessel.
The footage captures Ben-Gvir taunting the detainees, some of whom were visibly distressed.
Reports suggest that the Minister of Transport Miri Regev was also present, participating in what critics described as a “victory photo-op” staged amid the humiliation of international volunteers.
The activists, hailing from over 46 different countries, include several high-profile EU citizens, journalists, and human rights defenders.
EU Demands Dignity and Release
In a stern statement issued on May 21, 2026, the European External Action Service (EEAS) spokesperson slammed the behavior captured in the footage.
“The treatment of flotilla’s activists in the video shared by Minister Ben Gvir is completely unacceptable, as also indicated by his own government colleagues,” the statement read.
“Every detained person must be treated with safety, dignity and according to international law.” The EU further called on the Israeli government to ensure the immediate protection of the detainees and demanded their “speedy release.”
A Government Divided
The backlash has not been limited to foreign capitals. Within Israel, the video has deepened existing fractures in the coalition government.
Several of Ben-Gvir’s own colleagues
reportedly distanced themselves from footage, describing it as “unnecessary and damaging” to Israel’s international standing.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly faced intense pressure to rein in his National Security Minister, as the United States despite recently sanction of the flotilla’s organizers—issued its own sharp rebuke.
U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee reportedly stated that the actions “betrayed the dignity” expected of a democratic state.
The Human Cost
As the legal battle for the activists’ release begins, the Global Sumud Flotilla organizers maintain that their mission was purely humanitarian.
They argue that the “intentional physical abuse” and public mockery of bound detainees represent “new and dangerous pattern” of treatment for international dissenters.
For now, the world’s eyes remain on the Ashdod detention centers, where over hundreds of activists wait to see if the calls for their “speedy release” will be heard, or if they will remain pawns in a escalating political firestorm.
