The media landscape in Ibadan, Oyo State is currently grappling with significant instability following a sudden and extensive workforce reduction at the Dominion Broadcast Group, of Dominion Radio and Television.

The dismissal of at least fourteen media professionals has triggered widespread anxiety and prompted an urgent appeal for intervention from the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Chapter.

Sudden Workforce Reduction and Professional Impact

The mass disengagement, characterized by affected staff as “baseless” and “arbitrary,” has fundamentally altered the operational atmosphere at the Dominion broadcasting complex.

Observations from the facility indicate a transition from a collaborative creative
environment to one marked by heightened security and professional uncertainty.

Disengaged personnel, including prominent on-air personalities and technical staff, have expressed trauma over lack of administrative transparency and the perceived violation of standard labor practices.

Union Intervention and Institutional Response

In response to the layoffs, the affected workers have formally petitioned the leadership of the Oyo State NUJ, led by Comrade Akeem, to investigate the management’s actions.

The union is being urged to take a decisive stand against what is perceived as a growing trend of job insecurity within the regional media sector.

As of the current reporting period, the
management of Dominion Broadcast Group has not issued a formal statement to clarify the restructuring criteria or address the grievances of the terminated employees.

Key Details of the Dominion Broadcast Group Crisis

“The sudden mass termination was entirely baseless, violating standard labor practices and lacking any fair administrative process.

“Many dedicated their professional energy to building the station’s brand, only to be discarded overnight without justifiable cause.” — Anonymous Affected Staff Member.

Broader Implications for the Media Industry

The events at Dominion Broadcast Group highlight broader concerns regarding the dignity of the media profession and the vulnerability of journalists to sudden economic or administrative shifts.

The outcome of the NUJ’s investigation and potential mediation will likely set a precedent for labor relations within the Oyo State media community.
