The Federal Government has reiterated its steadfast commitment to bolstering institutions and organizations that significantly contribute to the flourishing of Nigeria’s media and cultural sectors.

This pledge comes as part of a broader initiative to foster responsible communication, uphold ethical journalism, and drive national

Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation,
articulated this commitment during the unveiling of the roadmap to the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU) @50.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday, Minister Idris lauded RATTAWU as pivotal partner in nationbuilding and an indispensable entity within Nigeria’s dynamic media and creative landscape.

The Minister underscored the profound significance of RATTAWU’s 50th anniversary, describing it as a national landmark that commemorates the enduring contributions of media, theatre, arts, and cultural professionals to the nation’s democracy, unity, and overall development.
He emphasized that while freedom of expression and press are cornerstones of democratic governance, their exercise must always be tempered with responsibility to safeguard national cohesion and peaceful coexistence.

“Responsible communication is critical to preserving national unity, strengthening democracy, promoting peaceful coexistence, and combating the growing challenge of misinformation and fake news,” Minister Idris stated.

He further asserted the imperative for freedom of speech to be inextricably linked with responsibility, urging a collective rejection of misinformation, fake news, divisive narratives, and the irresponsible use of media platforms.
Concurrently, he affirmed the govt’s
dedication to protecting constitutional rights of Nigerians to lawful expression and constructive criticism.

The Minister credited the sustained growth of Nigeria’s democracy to media professionals, broadcasters, artists, writers, performers, and communicators who have consistently leveraged their platforms to champion dialogue, accountability, public enlightenment, and
national cohesion.

He assured that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration recognizes media and cultural workers as strategic allies in nation-building, vowing to cultivate an enabling environment for their responsible growth under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
