Re-Elected Adeleke Backs Tinubu’s 2027 Bid in Osun Shockwave

Governor Ademola Adeleke’s victory speech has produced a striking political message: while accepting a second term in Osun State, the governor reaffirmed his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid for re-election in 2027.

His declaration came alongside congratulatory messages from Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, and Peter Obi, turning the outcome into both a state-level victory and a wider test of Nigeria’s democratic politics.

Adeleke was declared winner of the August 15 governorship election after polling 511,067 votes on the Accord Party platform.

His closest challenger, All Progressives Congress candidate Bola Oyebamiji, scored 444,815 votes, while African Democratic Congress candidate Najeem Salaam came third with 17,180 votes. Adeleke won 19 of Osun’s 30 local government areas, compared with Oyebamiji’s 11.

Speaking after the declaration, Adeleke thanked President Tinubu for calling to congratulate him. He described the result as “a victory for democracy in Nigeria” and “a victory for Osun people,” saying voters had endorsed his administration’s record in infrastructure, education, and agriculture.

But the most consequential part of his remarks was his renewed endorsement of Tinubu’s 2027 presidential bid. Asked whether he would support the President “all out,” Adeleke replied: “Big time, I will.”

Adeleke subsequently clarified that his support was not the product of a political agreement with Tinubu. He said it was based partly on the President’s identity as a Yoruba man from the South-West and on his desire to encourage Tinubu to continue development projects in the region.

He also said he would work with APC figures, including Oyebamiji and former Osun governor Gboyega Oyetola, when the 2027 campaign begins.

The endorsement creates an unusual political alignment. Adeleke remains associated with the opposition camp at the state level, yet he is publicly backing the incumbent President’s second-term bid.

The statement may strengthen Tinubu’s support in the South-West, but it also raises questions about the balance between regional solidarity, personal political relationships, policy interests, and party loyalty.

Tinubu welcomed Adeleke’s victory and described it as “a fitting assurance that democracy will continue to flourish” in Nigeria.

He urged the governor to unite Osun residents regardless of how they voted and to pursue growth, stability, and social and economic progress.

The President also commended the electoral commission, security agencies, and the other contestants for what he described as a peaceful and transparent election.

Adeleke, for his part, extended an olive branch to his opponents. Declaring that there was “no victor, no vanquished,” he invited them to work with his Govt and said he expected Oyebamiji to call and congratulate him.

He also promised to transform Osun from what he called a civil-service- dependent state into an industrial one.

The reactions from Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi provided a different political emphasis. Atiku accepted the declared result and said Adeleke’s victory reflected “the choice of the people of Osun as expressed at the ballot box.”

He commended the electorate for its peaceful participation and wished the governor success in his second term.

Obi framed the outcome as a civic lesson. Under the title “Osun: When the People Stand, Democracy Wins,” he said the election showed the power of citizens to choose their leaders.

He urged Nigerians to register, vote, and protect their ballots ahead of the 2027 general elections, while calling on political actors to embrace peace, unity, and the rule of law.

The three reactions reveal competing but overlapping political narratives. Tinubu sees the result as evidence of democratic continuity and has challenged Adeleke to unite and deliver.

Adeleke has accepted that challenge while using his victory platform to offer Tinubu an important political endorsement.

Atiku has stressed peaceful acceptance of the electorate’s verdict, while Obi has interpreted the election as a call for stronger voter participation and accountability.

The significance of Adeleke’s endorsement will ultimately depend on whether it produces more than political symbolism.

His support could deepen Tinubu’s appeal in the South-West, but the governor’s immediate responsibility remains Osun, where voters will judge his second term by the delivery of jobs, infrastructure, education, agriculture, and industrial growth.

For now, the Osun election has generated an uncommon convergence: a re-elected opposition-linked governor backing the President, a President calling for unity, and opposition figures saluting the voters’ mandate.

Whether that convergence becomes a platform for cooperation or merely a temporary post-election alignment will be determined by the politics—and performance—that follow.
