In the dense, conflict-ridden forests of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a deadly virus is spreading faster than any Ebola outbreak in history.
Caused by rare and poorly understood Bundibugyo strain, the epidemic has now become the largest in the country’s history, with 3,605 confirmed cases and 1,587 deaths as of July 30, 2026.
Unlike previous outbreaks driven by the more familiar Zaire strain, the Bundibugyo virus has no approved vaccine and no specific treatment.
The virus, first detected in February
2026 but only officially declared an outbreak in mid-May, has exploited the region’s chronic instability to ignite a public health emergency of international concern.
The Fastest Spread Ever Recorded
The World Health Organization (WHO) has described the current situation as the fastestgrowing Ebola outbreak ever recorded.
In a stark warning to the international
community, WHO Executive Director of Health Emergencies Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu stated,”This is a fire. There’s something driving the fire in its heart, and it’s also expanding at the same time” .
The virus has leaped from its origin in the Mongbwalu health zone of Ituri Province to infect 49 health zones across five provinces, including North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, and Tshopo.
During epidemiological week 30 alone, the outbreak recorded its highest weekly numbers yet: 567 cases and 296 deaths. Even more alarming is the invisibility of the transmission chains.
According to Dr. Ihekweazu, 80 percent of new cases are arriving from unknown transmission chains, meaning they aren’t linked to previously identified contacts. Furthermore, approximately two-thirds of the deaths are occurring in communities before victims can reach medical care.
WHO modeling suggests the true scale of the outbreak could be two to four times larger than official figures indicate.
A Perfect Storm of Conflict and Distrust
Containing the Bundibugyo virus requires rapid case identification, isolation, contact tracing, and safe burials.
However, the DRC is currently grappling with the displacement of seven million people, five million of whom are concentrated in the three provinces hardest hit by the virus.
The outbreak is colliding with a perfect storm of armed conflict and deep-seated community mistrust.
False claims that the disease is a hoax or a Western conspiracy have fueled attacks on health workers and treatment centers.
In one recent incident, an Ebola treatment center in Bunia was attacked by armed individuals, severely disrupting response efforts.
“Public trust in authorities is exceedingly low, and foreigners are often presumed to have exploitative agendas,” noted CFR expert Michelle Gavin, explaining the fertile ground for misinformation.
A recent analysis published in Nature highlights that without a vaccine or cure, containment relies entirely on public cooperation.
The authors argue that social and
behavioral change must be treated as a core public health intervention, rather than a mere communications add-on, because “improving communication alone is not a solution. Trust itself should be recognised as a public health intervention”.
A Stalled Global Response
The global response, coordinated by the WHO and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), has launched a $518 million, six-month emergency plan.
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has deployed over 1,400 staff to run treatment centers and support overwhelmed local facilities.
Despite these efforts, the response is severely underfunded and under- resourced. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that the outbreak is “continuing to outpace the response”.
The joint continental response plan currently faces a funding gap of over $400 million.
UNICEF Regional Director Gilles Fagninou emphasized the urgency of the financial shortfall: “We know how to stop this epidemic. The challenge is not the lack of solutions, but the lack of funding to deploy them at the scale needed”.
Tedros struck a similar chord, reminding the international community that funding the response is a matter of global security: “This is not charity. It’s an investment in national security”.
Uganda Clears the Virus, but Remains on Guard
Across the border, Uganda has achieved a significant milestone. On July 28, the Ugandan Ministry of Health declared the end of its Bundibugyo outbreak after 42 days without a new locally transmitted case.
The country recorded 20 confirmed cases and two deaths, primarily linked to cross-border transmission from the DRC.
However, health officials warn that Uganda remains at high risk of re-introduction due to the intense ongoing transmission in neighboring eastern Congo.
The situation underscores the interconnected nature of the region’s health security; a fire burning unchecked in the DRC threatens to engulf its neighbors once again.
