A heated political exchange has erupted between Nigeria’s main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace
Development, Festus Keyamo, over the potential 2027 presidential candidacy of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The verbal sparring highlights the intense political maneuvering already underway, with both sides trading barbs regarding moral authority, past governance, and the nation’s future.
The controversy ignited after the PDP affirmed its consideration of President Jonathan as its candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
This move drew a sharp rebuke from Festus Keyamo, who, in a statement, questioned the PDP’s decision and advised Jonathan against such a path.
Keyamo’s reaction, shared on X (formerly Twitter), described the PDP’s stance as a “bizarre comedy” and a “charade,” urging Jonathan to issue immediate “no, thank you” statement to protect his global image and avoid rekindling the “clueless” narrative that contributed to his 2015 electoral defeat.
In a swift and strongly worded press statement, the PDP fired back, asserting that Keyamo “has no moral authority to advise Jonathan.”
The party accused Keyamo of hypocrisy,
contrasting his current role as a govt official with his past as a vocal critic of
administrations and a champion of democratic principles.
The PDP suggested that Keyamo should instead focus on the pressing challenges within the aviation sector and broader national issues plaguing the country, such as “worsening economic hardship, persistent insecurity, and the declining purchasing power,” rather than meddling in the PDP’s internal affairs.
The PDP further underscored its position by reminding Nigerians of Jonathan’s tenure, which it characterized as a period of “political stability, sustained economic growth, increased foreign investor confidence, and a more inclusive national atmosphere.”
The party argued that the “obvious nervousness” from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and its members, like Keyamo, stems from the public’s prevailing desire for Jonathan’s return to leadership to foster stability and national healing.
The statement concluded by labeling the APC-led federal government as having “exemplified cluelessness in public administration since 2015.”
This escalating rhetoric signals the early stages of what promises to be a contentious political landscape leading up to the 2027 elections.
