An official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ogun State, Abass Olalekan, has been detained by police in connection with the death of a female corps member, Victoria Ariyo.

Ariyo, who was serving in the Abeokuta South Local Government Area, reportedly died on Tuesday following complications linked to a terminated pregnancy.

The NYSC management in a statement expressed deep sadness over the loss and extended condolences to the deceased’s family.

The scheme confirmed that the matter is under investigation by relevant security agencies and that the individual concerned has been taken into custody.

The NYSC reiterated its strict code of conduct for staff and corps members, vowing not to condone any misconduct or abuse of office, and assured full cooperation with law enforcement to ensure justice is served.

Reports indicated that the Corp member’s death has led to serious allegations against Olalekan, the Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South of Ogun State.
The inspector is accused of being romantically involved with Ariyo, with claims suggesting this relationship resulted in the pregnancy and its subsequent termination.

A police source confirmed Olalekan’s arrest and detention at State command headquarters in Eleweran, questioning the appropriateness of a relationship between an official and a corps member under his supervision.

DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the Ogun State Police spokesperson, confirmed that the State Criminal Investigation Department is investigating Ariyo’s death but declined to comment on the arrest or specific allegations.
Meanwhile, the NYSC in Ogun State has yet to issue an official response. Ariyo’s remains have been buried at Kobape Cemetery.

This incident follows closely on the heels of another corps member, Adeleye Mary, who served in the same LGA, dying under mysterious circumstances barely a month prior.

While investigations are ongoing, the NYSC urged the public to refrain from speculation and allow due process to take its course, emphasizing that the welfare, safety, and dignity of corps members remain paramount to the scheme.
