The United Nations and United States have reacted over report that Burma military regime-controlled Union Election Commission dissolved 40 political parties, including National League for Democracy (NLD).
According to the statement attributed to the UN Secretary- General, Antonio Guterres who is deeply concerned by this decision to dissolve 40 opposition including the NLD led by State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
Myanmar’s military junta announced this week that the National League for Democracy (NLD) is among 40 political parties and other groups dissolved for failing to meet political party registration deadline imposed under the new Political Party Registration Law.
The UN Chief said, “Any attempts to undermine democratic institutions and processes will only deepen the crisis and delay the return to a fully democratic and inclusive Myanmar”.
The Secretary-General renewed his call on neighbouring countries and other Member States to urge the military leadership to adhere to inclusive political processes.
While reiterating his call for the immediate release of all arbitrarily detained prisoners, including President Win Myint and State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
Also, United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken said United States strongly condemn the Burma military regime-controlled Union Election Commission’s decision to abolish 40 political parties, including the National League for Democracy (NLD).
In a statement released on Thursday, the Secretary recalled how the people voted overwhelmingly to re-elect the NLD and other parties in November 2020 national elections.
According to him, “The military regime’s decision to dissolve the political parties shows its continued contempt for the popular will of Burma’s people and multi-party democracy.
“The military’s ongoing efforts to stifle political dissent and eradicate civic space are designed to further entrench its own power and interests.
“This action further demonstrates that the regime’s plans for deeply flawed elections, if held, will not represent the will of Burma’s voters”, Blinken added.
US Secretary reiterated the United States calls for the military regime to reverse course and end the use of violence against the people in Burma, free those it has unjustly detained, and respect its obligations under international law.
“We remain committed to supporting genuine multiparty democracy, peace, and respect for human rights”, Secretary of State, Antony Blinken said.
Meanwhile, it was reported that the law requires existing political parties to reregister within 60 days or be dissolved. But many of the parties including the NLD refused to comply, saying that ongoing military oppression prevents proposed elections from being credible.
Burma’s military junta, which staged a military coup on February 1, 2021, claims it wants to hold elections, promulgated the party registration law on January 26. However, its provisions appear intended to indefinitely delay, rather than facilitate, Myanmar’s return to civilian democratic rule.
