Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep condolences to Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan following the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan.
In a heartfelt tribute, Tinubu acknowledged the profound personal loss suffered by President Samia, her children and the wider Hassan family.
He described Hafidh as a quiet but steadfast companion who stood beside the Tanzanian leader for nearly five decades through every chapter of her public service.
“Such a companionship becomes part of who a person is,” Tinubu said, reflecting on the pain of losing a lifelong partner.
On behalf of Nigeria’s government and people, as well as his family, the Nigerian president extended sympathy to President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania.
He said Nigeria stood with Tanzania in mourning, emphasizing the strength of the bonds that unite African nations during times of grief.
Tinubu prayed for Allah to grant Hafidh eternal rest and give President Samia and her family the strength to endure their painful loss.
Ndejembi said Ameir died at about 8 a.m. at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar. The vice-president announced the death in a national address and said funeral arrangements were under way in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar.
“It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of Mr Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan,” Ndejembi said, as quoted by The Citizen.
The reports identified a heart condition or heart-related illness as the reason Ameir had been receiving treatment. No more specific medical diagnosis was given in the official account cited by those reports.
